Whitney Elizabeth Houston is the youngest of four children born in Newark, NJ on the 9th of August 1993. Her parents are gospel singer Cissy Houston - n e Emily Lee Drinkard - and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne Warwick was also famous for her singing. Her first singing gig was in the choir at the church she attended The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark as a young child and at fifteen, she was singing back vocals professionally with their mother in Chaka Khan's hit song from 1978 Im Every Woman. She sang backing vocals on Jermaine Jackson, Lou Rawls as well as her mother. In 1983 she was a part of the New York City funk-rock band Material hired her as their main singer. It became one of the best-selling albums of an artist. From the album, she had several smash singles, such as Saving all My Love for You How Will You Know That You're a Good Person? and The Greater Love of All. This led to her achieving seven US Top Ones consecutively. It was even better than the Beatles. The album was released in 1987 and sold 25 million copies worldwide. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney that included hits What Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built the foundation of her popularity, however it was 1992's film The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the most successful artists ever. While the film wasn't a huge hit and neither did her performance, the score of her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You hit the number one spot on the single and album charts across the United States for months. She sold over 44,000,000 albums around the world. In the same year she gave birth to her daughter Bobbi she married Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group.
